DALLAS — Free Agency has brought some major shake-ups across the WNBA over the past week! But there's one guarantee, Dallas Wings are banking on their star center Teaira McCowan.
McCowan, who was acquired by the Wings in a trade with the Indiana Fever last offseason, has now been signed to a multi-year deal with the squad, the team announced Monday.
The Brenham, Texas native brought some much-needed energy and dominance at the center position for the Wings last season, helping to spark a last-season surge to the playoffs.
"We are thrilled to have Teaira to an agreement that will keep her in a Wings uniform for the foreseeable future," Dallas Wings President and CEO Greg Bibb said in a news release.
"When we acquired Teaira last year, the vision was to bring her to Dallas for the long term. I'm pleased we were able to reach an agreement with her that allows her to continue her career with the Wings organization for years to come. We share Teaira's excitement in having her call Dallas home."
McCowan has been a great add to the Wings organization since she's taken the court. She was named the WNBA's Western Conference Player of the Month for August, making her the first player to be honored with the title since the franchise moved to Dallas.
In August, McCowan recorded four double-doubles, averaged 17.4 points and 11.6 rebounds, and shot 55% from the field.
Overall last season, McCowan appeared in 33 games, averaged 11 points and seven rounds, and made 60.2% of her shots, which was the sixth-highest percentage in the WNBA.
Against the reigning WNBA champs, the Las Vegas Aces, McCowan made franchise history when she recorded 10 offensive rebounds in a single game in their August matchup.
"I am so excited to continue to play for the Wings organization and to be able to call Dallas home for years to come, as this is where I wanted to be all along," McCowan said in a news release. "I believe we are putting something special together here in Dallas and I cannot wait to reunite with my teammates and compete for WNBA championships."
Something special indeed... In January, the Wings made a blockbuster three-team trade, acquiring two-time WNBA All-Star and three-time WNBA champion Natasha Howard, as well as the playing rights to 2020 WNBA Rookie of the Year Crystal Dangerfield.
With the new pieces, and maybe more with how free agency is looking, the Wings hope to be one of the top contenders this upcoming season.
McCowan is currently playing overseas with Galatasaray in Istanbul, Turkey and tearing up the boards. She's averaging 16.5 points and 10.2 rebounds in the Turkish Women's Basketball Super League.
McCowan also plays for the Turkish National Team in the EuroBasket Qualifying Tournament, where she's averaging 27 points and 13 rebounds, and shooting 72.7% from the field.
Over her career, McCowan has appeared in 121 games, starting 64 of them. She's averaged about 11 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks over her four years in the WNBA. Before joining the Wings, she spent three years with the Indiana Fever, where she recorded two highest marks in that franchise: rebounds in a single season (308 in 2021 and 305 in 2019).
McCowan was the third overall pick by the Fever out of Mississippi State in the 2019 WNBA Draft.
