North Texas native defeats French player in first round of US Open

The win over France's Hugo Grenier (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5) was Mitchell Krueger's second career Grand Slam singles match.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth native Mitchell Krueger won his second career Grand Slam singles match at the US Open on Monday, defeating France's Hugo Grenier in the first round. 

Krueger took the match in four sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5) to advance to the next round. The US Open began on Aug. 19 with the qualifying matches. The main tournament began Monday. Krueger defeated Czech Republic's Vít Kopřiva (6-4, 6-2), Jordan's A. Shelbayh (3-6, 7-5, 6-1) and Germany's Maximilian Marterer (6-4, 6-2) in the qualifying rounds.

Krueger is set to face Czech Republic's Jiri Lehecka in the second round. The second-round payout is $140,000, per tournament officials.
