FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas got back on the winning track after beating Copa Tejas rival, Austin FC, 2-1 on Saturday.
Austin FC won the first meeting of the year at Q2 Stadium, 2-1, back in March. Since then, Austin had gone 4-1-1, and FC Dallas, on the other hand, struggled since that game, going 1-3-2.
But, FC Dallas had never lost to Austin FC at home in club history and that trend held true. Petar Musa opened up the scoring early after taking advantage of a turnover on a pass played back by Sebastian Driussi. Musa's 4th-minute goal was his fourth of the 2024 MLS season. It was the fastest goal for FC Dallas this season.
A shot by Austin FC left back Guilherme Biro ringed off the post in the 36th minute.
Jesus Ferreira doubled the FC Dallas lead after scoring on a breakaway in the 57th minute. With the goal, Ferreira became the youngest player in MLS history to reach 50 regular season goals.
“I honestly did not know about that, it's great knowing that now and it’s a great feeling. My goal here is to break records and write history, especially create my own history," Ferreira said "This is the club that I grew up with watching and playing, it has a lot of meaning to me. Knowing my family has a big influence in the club is amazing.”
Austin FC made things interesting late after Owen Wolff drew a foul in the penalty area. Driussi converted on the penalty kick in the 84th minute.
“The team had really, really high-level moments in the game that we were missing this season. We need to be more consistent on that. There are players that have played together for only the second or third time this year," FC Dallas head coach Nico Estevez said. "That is important to create that connection. The willingness to win the game. The suffering, the sacrifice, and hanging in there during difficult moments. Don’t lose the game because of not being focused or not believing, and being humble to defend when it was needed. It was a collective team win. It’s very united, you can see it in how they battle for each other and how they want to win for their fans and for the club.”
FC Dallas will have another Copa Tejas match next weekend. The Toros will go on the road to take on Houston Dynamo.
"We just have to go in there with a lot of energy and try to come up with a good plan and then hopefully get another old derby win and make it three in a row and climb in the Copa Tejas standings,” FC Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes said.
