Dallas' 1st women's pro soccer team opens season with 1-1 draw

Dallas Trinity FC will play their first game in the Cotton Bowl in a friendly match against the world-renowned club, FC Barcelona, on Aug. 30.

TAMPA, Fla. — Editor's note: The video published above is a live interview Good Morning Texas did with Dallas Trinity FC General Manager/Acting Head Coach Chris Petrucelli before their first match.

A new era of DFW soccer began on Sunday.

For the first time ever, a professional women's soccer club representing Dallas took to the pitch in Tampa, Fla.

Dallas Trinity FC opened their inaugural season in the USL Super League, a new eight-team women's professional soccer league, with a 1-1 draw against Tampa Bay Sun FC.

Trinity took an early lead with a goal right before halftime. The first goal in Dallas Trinity FC history was scored by center back Hannah Davison, who headed in a cross by London-born, Coppell-raised forward Chioma Ubogagu off of a short corner.

"It was really exciting. This club is really special to all of us, and that goal was going to go to someone. I think that with the way we played that whole first half we deserved to be going into halftime with that goal. To score the first goal in team history is really cool, there's lots more to come, and it was really special," Davison said.

Dallas Trinity FC dominated possession (53% to 47%) and outshot Tampa Bay Sun FC in the game (14 shots versus six shots; seven shots on goal versus two shots on goal). Tampa Bay Sun FC equalized, however, with a header on a corner kick in the 69th minute.

"The second half was a little bit of a battle, but overall we're pretty happy with how we played. I would have liked to have gotten three points, but happy with a point," said General Manager/Acting Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. Petrucelli has previous coaching experience with the SMU Mustangs (2012-2022) and NWSL club Chicago Red Stars (2022-2023).

Petrucelli coached the club in their first match because head coach Pauline MacDonald is still working to get her visa approved.

Dallas Trinity FC will play before home fans for the first time in Cotton Bowl Stadium on Aug. 30 in a friendly match against world-renowned club FC Barcelona. The club's first USL Super League home match is set for Sept. 7 against DC Power FC.
