Plano West football coach Mike Hughes told players Monday that he's retiring.

Another of the state's most prominent Texas high school football coaches, Plano West football coach Mike Hughes announced his retirement. Hughes told his players Monday afternoon.

"He has given 30 tremendous years of service to the Plano ISD," PISD athletic director Gerald Brence said. "I tried to talk him out of it, but couldn't."

The Wolves reached the second round after a victory over Keller at AT&T Stadium in the first round. ' roots in the Plano system run deep. West had one of the nation's top recruits this season with running back Soso Jamabo who signed with UCLA last week. Under Hughes, West has sent dozens of college to major colleges, including David Lofton (Stanford), Jordan Pugh (Texas A&M), the nephews of Brian Bosworth, Korey and Kyle Miller Bosworth (UCLA) and Jackson Jeffcoat at Texas.

Hughes is one of several high-profile changes across Texas in recent months. Euless Trinity coach Steve Lineweaver announced his retirement as well as DeSoto coach Claude Mathis moving to SMU and Skyline coach Reggie Samples leaving the DISD power for Duncanville.

West had its school record playoff run in 2012, advancing four rounds deep behind a high-powered offense with Jamabo and running back Auston Anderson (at Northwestern). West had a 10-2 record in 2005 led by the nephews of Brian Bosworth, Korey and Kyle Miller Bosworth, who went on to play at UCLA.

Plano West, has been high profile since it opened as the PISD's third school in 1999 on property near a Polo ranch and now foreshadowed the population boom in Collin County seen all up the North Dallas Tollway to Celina and Prosper and on Central Expressway to the East up through Allen and McKinney.

Hughes was a successful offensive coordinator for Brence, then at Plano before Hugheswas tabbed by former PISD athletic director John Kimbrough to replace Mark Reeve who opened the school.

The PISD, with a history of promoting coaches with school ties, will post the position and hopes to have a successor in late February.
