PARIS, France — As we get set for the final day of the Paris Summer Olympics on Sunday, the United States and China are going wire to wire to see which country can finish with more gold medals.
As of now, China has 39 and the U.S. has 38. The United States has an overwhelmingly higher number of overall medals, totaling 122 compared to second-place China's 90, but the U.S. is trying to win the medal count in every category.
What needs to happen in order for U.S. to surpass China in gold medals
With the U.S. trailing by one medal, one Olympics expert on social media is breaking down what the U.S. needs to do to win the gold medal count.
The expectation would be that the United States and China both have at least one more "shoe-in" gold medal in competition. It's expected the U.S. will win in women's basketball and that China will win in women's weightlifting.
But then things get interesting in the final day of competition.
China has no more viable contenders to win gold meanwhile, the United States has three. Despite not being favored to win gold in any of the three, there's a chance the U.S. could steal a gold or two to at least tie or potentially take the lead.
