WASHINGTON — Day 2 of the Summer Games brings the spotlight back to the pool, plus the Olympic return of Simone Biles and an American fencer looks to become a back-to-back champion.
Swimming
France's Leon Marchand is eyeing gold in the 400-meter individual medley. He broke Michael Phelps' last remaining individual world record in that event last summer.
The French athlete is coached by Bob Bowman — Phelps' career-long coach.
Plus, more swimming medals on the line in the men's 100-meter breaststroke and women’s 100-meter butterfly.
Fencing
In fencing, Lee Kiefer seeks to repeat as champion in foil. At the last Summer Games, she became just the third American to win fencing gold.
Kiefer is one half of Team USA's fencing power couple. The reigning foil champion is married to two-time bronze medalist Gerek Meinhardt, who is featured in U.S. men's team foil,
Kiefer and Meinhardt both put medical school at the University of Kentucky on hold to train for the Olympics but will go back next year.
Skateboarding
Over in the skateboarding venue, the world’s best female skateboarders will face off on the street course in the heart of the city. It'll be the first skateboarding events of the Paris Games after Saturday's men's competition got rained out and postponed.
Women's Gymnastics
And rounding out Day 2, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team makes its first appearance in Paris. Get ready for Simone Biles, Suni Lee and the rest of the American squad competing in qualifying events.
Biles is making her return to the Olympic stage three years after the gymnastics superstar pulled out of several events during the Tokyo Games.
The 27-year-old arrives in Paris as the most decorated women's gymnast ever with a combined 37 medals between Olympics and world championships.
