Texas' Olympic medal count: If Texas were a country, how would its Paris medal haul stack up with the rest of the world?

The U.S. led the medal count in the 2024 Paris Olympics -- and Texas athletes have heavily contributed to that success.

DALLAS — Texans racked up Olympic medals in Paris this summer -- and many of them even reached the gold standard in their sport.

In all, 41 athletes represented the Lone Star State on Team USA in the 2024 summer games (including players like Scottie Scheffler, who took home the gold in golf), giving Texas the third-highest representation out of any state in the union, behind only California (120) and Florida (42).

The number of Texans donning the red, white and blue in France one further grows when you expand it to include athletes with Texas ties (like Hailey Van Lith, a student-athlete at TCU who just won bronze for the U.S. in Women's 3x3 Basketball) and Texans competing for other countries (such as Julien Alfred, who ran at UT-Austin and beat out Dallas' Sha-Carri Richardson in the 100-meter dash to win her home country of St. Lucia its the first-ever Olympic gold).

So: If you were to combine the efforts of all the Olympians that Texas can arguably claim, how does the state stack up against other competing nations in terms of medals won in Paris?

Let's just say our representatives are doing Texas proud.

In terms of total medals, Texas would rank seventh internationally in the games -- just one medal behind Japan at sixth, but four ahead of Italy in eighth.

When it comes to just gold medals, Texas performs even better: The state would have tied with Australia for fourth place in those world rankings.

In the end, Texas's total gold medal count was almost half the amount that Team USA won.

There a reason they say you shouldn't mess with Texas. Clearly, that logic applies to international sporting competitions, too.
