DALLAS — Dallas native Sha'Carri Richardson is making her long-awaited Olympics debut this week.
The world champion sprinter will compete in the women's 100-meter competition, which begins preliminary rounds Friday, Aug. 2, and the women's 4-by-100-meter relay, which starts next week, on Aug. 8.
Richardson, 24, took home gold medals from the World Championships in both the 100-meter and relay events at Budapest in 2023. But she's yet to compete in the Olympics. She was well on her way to Tokyo in 2021 when a failed marijuana test resulted in her suspension just shortly before the Summer Games.
Now, the former Dallas Carter and LSU athlete will get her moment on the world's biggest stage. Richardson is currently the betting favorite to win the women's 100-meter race, ahead of Jamaica's Shericka Jackson and 2020's silver medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
Elaine Thompson-Herah, the Jamaican sprinter who won gold in the 100-meter in 2016 and 2020 Olympics, is missing the Summer Games with an injury.
This year's Olympic track and field events are being held at Stade de France, in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, just north of the city.
