DALLAS — Stars legend Mike Modano will be enshrined into Dallas sports lore on Saturday when a statue in PNC Plaza outside of the American Airlines Center is unveiled.
Modano is the Stars' all-time leader in points (1,359), goals (557), assists (802) and games played (1,459). The Stars' No. 1 overall pick in the 1988 NHL Draft, then the Minnesota North Stars before relocating to Dallas, led the team to its only Stanley Cup in 1999. Modano played nearly his entire NHL career in the organization, playing only the final season of his 22-year career for the Detroit Red Wings.
Modano's No. 9 jersey was retired by the Dallas Stars in March 2014. Later that year, in November 2014, Modano was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The statue unveiling was postponed because of rain and will be during the first intermission of the Stars' game against the Los Angeles Kings. Modano and his family, Dallas Stars President and CEO Brad Alberts, Stars Analyst Daryl Reaugh, and the statue's artists, Omri Amrany and Sean Bell, will attend the unveiling.
Modano's statue will accompany the statue of another Dallas sports legend, Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, who had his statue erected on Christmas Day in 2022.
Dallasites will recognize Amrany's work: He designed the Nowitzki statue that Modano's will sit alongside.
"I think being out there in that plaza with Dirk means a lot," Modano said last November. "He's been such a great friend and good guy. When I got called about this a few years ago, I knew it was going to be exciting."
Amrany and his team are also responsible for statues around the globe of Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Gordie Howe, David Beckham, and more. As for what this statue will look like, Amrany said he isn't going to divulge that just yet.
