Dallas Stars legend Mike Modano's statue officially unveiled

Modano's statue was unveiled during the Stars’ game against the Los Angeles Kings.

DALLAS — Rain delayed but couldn’t stop the official unveiling of the statue of Dallas Stars legend Mike Modano Saturday in PNC Plaza outside of the American Airlines Center.

The much-anticipated statue depicts the hockey icon flying across the neutral zone.

Stars fans got their first look at the statue during the Stars’ game against the Los Angeles Kings. Attendees in the AAC watched the statue's unveiling on the jumbotron. Rain scrapped the previous plans to do the unveiling ahead of the game.

Modano is the Stars' all-time leader in points (1,359), goals (557), assists (802) and games played (1,459). The Stars' No. 1 overall pick in the 1988 NHL Draft, then the Minnesota North Stars before relocating to Dallas, led the team to its only Stanley Cup in 1999. Modano played nearly his entire NHL career in the organization, playing only the final season of his 22-year career for the Detroit Red Wings.

Modano’s statue accompanies another Dallas sports legend – former Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, whose statue was placed on Christmas Day 2022. Omri Amrany designed both Modano and Nowitzki’s statues, as well as others around the world, including ones of Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and more.

His No. 9 jersey was retired by the Dallas Stars in March 2014. Later that year, in November 2014, Modano was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Modano also served as the grand marshal of Dallas’ Saint Patrick’s Day parade in Lower Greenville earlier Saturday.
