ARLINGTON — Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo showed few signs of having a surgically-repaired back on Sunday, turning in one the most impressive performances of his career.
Romo led the Cowboys to a 42-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts with a passer rating of 151.7. It was his fifth game with a passer rating of at least 135.
Romo said his rhythm is improving. "We've changed a couple of things that is helping; I'm not going into detail on that, but I think it'll help us to have a chance. We've run the ball well all year. That helps."
At one point, Romo completed a career high 16 passes in a row. In his last three games, Romo has tossed 10 touchdowns with no interceptions.
"I just think we're a better football team," Romo said. "I think we're better in both phases, and it's just great to see the guys play a really good football game when we needed it. I'm proud of them."
Romo finished 18 of 20 for 218 yards and four touchdowns. It's becoming the best season of Romo's career.
"We'll we're all judged by wins and losses, and in that regard, this would be near the top," Romo said. "Specifically, I'm a better player. There is no question."
Romo also broke Troy Aikman's career passing yardage record of 32,942 on a touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten. Romo's total is now at 32,971.
"It's always an honor anytime you're mentioned with Aikman or Staubach," Romo said. "It's just a fraternity of guys that is special to be a part of. I'm glad I get to be in that group."
"It was special," Witten said. "I was happy for him. When you play that position, there is a lot that comes with it, especially in this organization with [Roger] Staubach, Danny White, and obviously with [Troy] Aikman.
The history of Cowboys players in the past has made their footsteps hard to follow. Still, the goal is simple.
"It's to compete for championships, and we haven't done that yet," Witten said. "When [Romo] hits his head on the pillow tonight, he should be proud. He's a big reason why we're in the situation we're in."
"Certainly they [Romo and Witten] have a unique relationship, and it was fun to see that happen," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. "Tony has obviously been a great quarterback for this franchise for a long time. I think we've done a good job organizationally making the team better around him."
