Jerry Jones on potential Cowboys' QB switch: 'You'll know it when you see it'

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wouldn’t specifically state on Tuesday what it would take for quarterback Dak Prescott to be benched in favor of Tony Romo, instead relying on a line that was most notably used in a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on obscenity and pornography.

“I don’t have a definition for it, but you know it when you see it,” Jones said on Dallas-based KRLD-FM radio on Tuesday. “It’s kind of like a definition I heard one time on another issue trying to define a negative topic. ‘I don’t know how to say it, but it’s just something that when you see it, you know it’s there.’ We’ll see it.”

Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart drafted a concurring opinion published in a 1964 ruling in Jacobellis v. Ohio that used that line of reasoning. The Supreme Court reversed a conviction of man who managed an arts theater that showed a French movie that area authorities claimed was obscene.

After the Cowboys’ 10-7 loss to the New York Giants, during which Prescott was intercepted twice and completed just 17 of 37 passes, Jones and coach Jason Garrett said they had given no thought to benching the rookie for Romo.

“We’re fortunate to have that legitimate discussion,” Jones said Tuesday when asked if he’s tired of fielding questions about his quarterback situation.

Romo, who suffered a back injury in the preseason, returned to practice a month ago and has served as Prescott’s backup in recent games.
