CLEVELAND — Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was in good spirits and moving around well in the locker room after injuring his knee in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, according to coach Mike McCarthy.
Ferguson landed awkwardly as he tried to hurdle a Browns player and was taken back to the locker room by training staff. Ferguson had three catches for 15 yards at the time of his injury.
Ferguson did not return to the game.
But it doesn't appear Ferguson's injury will put him on the shelf for long, if at all. WFAA Cowboys insider Ed Werder reported that the Cowboys do not believe Ferguson's injury is serious and he'll miss only a minimal amount of time, if any.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that initial tests do not indicate that Ferguson suffered an ACL tear, and all X-rays have come back negative.
McCarthy on Sunday told reporters he did not have an official update on Ferguson, but said Ferguson would get testing done on Monday. Dak Prescott said Ferguson was optimistic when they spoke to each other.
“I think we’ve dodged a big one. Just talking to him, he gave me a lot of confidence … He gave me good news,” Prescott said.
Ferguson caught 71 passes for 761 yards and five touchdowns last season. He was drafted by the Cowboys in the fourth round in 2022 out of the University of Wisconsin.
Dallas went on to defeat the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, 33-17.
