NFL insider Ed Werder to join WFAA’s coverage of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2024-2025 season

Werder will make regular appearances in WFAA’s news broadcasts throughout the season, and will contribute multiple articles to WFAA.com each week.

DALLAS — To borrow a line from Jerry Jones: WFAA is going “all in” on its coverage of the Dallas Cowboys throughout the 2024-2025 season – and it’s made a big offseason signing to bolster its firepower, too.

WFAA announced today that longtime NFL insider Ed Werder will be joining its award-winning sports department, led by Lead Sports Anchor Joe Trahan, in covering the Cowboys this coming season by appearing regularly on WFAA’s news broadcasts and writing multiple articles each week for WFAA.com.

“I’m thrilled to have Ed join our team at WFAA Sports," Trahan said. "He’s battled-tested and seen just about everything the NFL and Cowboys can throw at you. His professionalism and attention to detail have distinguished him for decades, making him a trusted source for NFL fans. Having a heavy hitter like Ed join our lineup is a big win all around, for our viewers and WFAA sports, as well.”

Few know the Cowboys — or the NFL — like Werder. For 26 years, he worked as an ESPN NFL Insider and reporter with a special emphasis on covering the Cowboys for its flagship SportsCenter, NFL Live, NFL Sunday Countdown and Monday Night Countdown programs. Prior to that, he worked as an NFL reporter for CNNSI, served as a correspondent for Sports Illustrated and covered the Cowboys for both the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (in 1989) and the Dallas Morning News (from 1992 to 1996).

He has covered 32 Super Bowls over the course of his career, and in 2017 was honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the Professional Football Writers of America’s prestigious Dick McCann Award (since renamed for Bill Nunn), which annually recognizes a reporter with a long and distinguished history of pro football coverage.

It was Werder who first broke the news Barry Switzer would replace Jimmy Johnson as the Cowboys’ head coach once Johnson’s relationship with team owner Jerry Jones deteriorated — despite, of course, Johnson winning back-to-back Super Bowls for the franchise.

“I’m honored and excited for the opportunity to join the talented WFAA team this season as we expand coverage of the Dallas Cowboys in what should prove to be to one of the most fascinating seasons in franchise history,” Werder said. “I look forward to providing coverage on television and online, using my vast experience and institutional knowledge of the Cowboys — combined with trusted relationships formed throughout the NFL — to bring unparalleled reporting depth and unique perspective to our audiences. Having spent the past 32 years in DFW, I know each of my teammates, respect their journalism and the work they do — and look forward to the great things we can accomplish together.”

Werder will appear on WFAA Daybreak and WFAA News 8 at 5 p.m on the day following each Cowboys game this season, and will provide updates from the Cowboys’ headquarters at The Star in Frisco on WFAA News 8 at 5 p.m. each Thursday.

A weekly column he’ll write about the team will run each Tuesday on WFAA.com, and a weekly news-and-notes report featuring the latest information regarding the franchise will be published to the website each Thursday.

He will join WFAA’s coverage of breaking Cowboys news throughout the season, too.

“Ed Werder needs no introduction to Dallas Cowboys fans — he is an institution when it comes to covering all the on-field action and front-office activity involving the most valuable sports franchise in the world,” said Sean Hamilton, WFAA’s Director of Sports and Special Projects. “For the better part of four decades now, his reporting has been part and parcel to the way Cowboys fans consume information regarding their favorite franchise. Ed joining our team shows WFAA’s commitment to further establishing itself as the go-to source for all things Cowboys-related — in North Texas and beyond. We are thrilled to welcome his knowledge, wit and extensive NFL rolodex into our own legacy of Cowboys coverage.”
