DALLAS — Count wideout CeeDee Lamb as onboard with the coaching moves that the Dallas Cowboys made in the wake of their divisional playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The two-time Pro Bowl receiver joined SiriusXM NFL Radio on radio row in Glendale, Arizona, the site of Super Bowl LVII, to talk about the recent changes the Cowboys made to the offensive coaching staff following the departure of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
Lamb, who caught 107 passes for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns through 17 starts, is enthused to have Schottenheimer promoted to offensive coordinator, and doesn't believe the offense will vastly change.
“I doubt it will be different, but very excited," Lamb said. "I think Coach Schotty, he has a great job and he’s in a great position to where, like, he can step up and be himself."
Lamb noted that Schottenheimer spent the past season on the staff as the Cowboys' offensive analyst, a consultant role on coach Mike McCarthy's staff that began in 2021 when former New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo was a consultant on the staff.
"He’s been in the building one or two years now, and understands how everything is really operating," said Lamb. "He knows what we do best. He knows what we don’t do well and what we can work on. So, as far as going into training camp, I feel like he has a playing field that kind of keeps him comfortable.”
Moore, who took the offensive coordinator job with the Los Angeles Chargers, was the play caller for the Cowboys. McCarthy will take over those duties similar to what he did for much of his tenure with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018.
Lamb approves, citing that McCarthy, "understands what we do."
"So, [I'm] very comfortable with it and I’m very excited," Lamb said.
One of the key elements for why the Cowboys offense was able to finish as the third-best scoring offense and the 10th-best total offense in 2022 was because of the return of quarterback Dak Prescott, who sustained a broken thumb on his right hand in Week 1. Although the Cowboys were 4-2 by the time of his return, the offense was holding forth with backup Cooper Rush. Inserting a healthy Prescott back into the lineup sparked the Dallas offense.
"Having Dak back, it just — our offense just shot up," said Lamb. "Have a guy in the backfield that trusts my ability, my technique, and understanding I am going to win my one-on-ones each and every time. We were just clicking offensively: big plays, explosive plays, and that’s all we’re about. We’re about big plays.”
