No, there weren't more Caitlin Clark jerseys sold in one day than Cowboys jerseys last year

Basketball writer Dick Weiss claimed in a post on X that more Caitlin Clark Indiana Fever jerseys were sold in one day than Cowboys jerseys all of last year.

DALLAS — The Caitlin Clark hype is real. But at least one jaw-dropping stat thrown out about Clark Mania is not.

The longtime basketball writer Dick Weiss on Thursday claimed in a post on X that more Caitlin Clark Indiana Fever jerseys were sold in one day "than the Cowboys sold last year for the entire team."

Weiss was *likely* being tongue-in-cheek, but the post quickly picked up steam, catching more than 1.6 million views, to go along with a few aggregated stories citing the information (which didn't cite any data).

So we decided to look into it.

THE QUESTION

Did the Indiana Fever sell more Caitlin Clark jerseys in one day than the Cowboys sold last year for the entire team?

THE SOURCES

  • Fanatics, which produces and sells jerseys for the WNBA and NFL (among other pro sports leagues)

THE ANSWER

This is false.

We reached out to Fanatics officials to verify the stat posted by Weiss, and the company said the information was "not true/inaccurate." Fanatics didn't provide more details on how many Cowboys jerseys were sold compared to how many Clark jerseys were sold.

Granted, there were PLENTY of Caitlin Clark jerseys sold last week, so much so that her Fever jersey was already the top-selling jersey for a WNBA draft pick, Fanatics told NBC News. The jersey was quickly sold out.

But still, it would be hard to top sales for the ENTIRE Cowboys roster last season. Micah Parsons, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb were consistently among the top-selling jerseys across the NFL last season.

Whether the Cowboys win in the playoffs or not, they still know how to sell a jersey or two.
