FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU's football season opener just got a whole lot more interesting.
Multiple reports revealed the University of North Carolina and Bill Belichick reached an agreement to name the longtime Patriots coach to lead the Tarheels on Wednesday.
To open the season, the Horned Frogs will head to Chapel Hill to take on Belichick and the Tarheels in his first-ever game coaching college football.
Belichick started his coaching career in the NFL as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975. After a successful stint as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, where he and head coach Bill Parcells won two Super Bowls, Belichick went on to coach the Browns, Patriots and Jets. In 2000, he returned to New England, where he remained until 2023, winning six Super Bowls.
Dating back to 1940, TCU is 0-3 against UNC. The last time the two teams met was on Oct. 4, 1997, when TCU fell 31-10.
This isn't TCU's first time taking on a high-profile coach in a new gig to start the season. In 2023, TCU opened play against Colorado in the first season under Deion Sanders. The Horned Frogs lost that game 45-43.
TCU will serve as a barometer for Belichick's impact on the Tarheels on Aug. 30, 2025.
