FORT WORTH -- Trent Johnson is out at TCU.

The head men's basketball coach was relieved of his duties Monday morning, after the Horned Frogs finished their season as one of just three Big 12 teams to miss the NCAA Tournament.

TCU finished their season 12-21, and just 2-16 in Big 12 play. Johnson spent four years in Fort Worth.

“Trent Johnson is a man of unbelievable integrity,” TCU Athletic Director Del Conte said in a statement released by the school. “It’s hard to find a better person than Trent, and I have the highest level of respect for him. However, we believe change is needed in the leadership of our men’s basketball program.

"With our new facility and playing in the Big 12, the strongest basketball conference in the country, we’re positioned well to have a men’s basketball program that makes TCU and Fort Worth proud. Trent inherited a very difficult situation, and we truly appreciated his efforts over the last four years. We simply did not have the success we envisioned, but believe the pieces are now in place for us to move forward."

TCU's 12-21 record was the worst among Big 12 schools. The Big 12 sent seven of its 10 teams to the NCAA tournament. Only TCU, Oklahoma State and Kansas State missed the postseason.

In 2014-15, TCU began the year 13-0, only to finish with a 4-14 mark in Big 12 play, losing 15 of their final 20 games, to miss the NCAA Tournament.

In 2013-14, TCU went 0-18 in conference play, posting a 9-22 mark overall. Johnson's first season was an 11-21 campaign, with a 2-16 conference record. All tolled, Johnson was 50-79 overall, with a 8-64 record in Big 12 play.

The Horned Frogs began playing this season in their brand new $72 million Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena.

The school says a search will begin immediately for their next head men’s basketball coach.
