DALLAS — The SMU Volleyball team recorded yet another historic milestone.
On Tuesday, the Mustangs got a major win over No. 2 ranked Nebraska the first sellout crowd in the history of the volleyball program.
The second-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers are one of the premiere programs in the college volleyball landscape for their 2024 season home opener.
Not only did SMU beat Nebraska, they swept them! In three sets, the Mustangs put on a dominant performance. The closest the Cornhuskers came to winning a set was in the first game, where they scored 23.
After the win, the Mustangs will likely crack into the top 25. Currently, the team is unranked with a 2-1 record. Their only loss came at the hands of Hawaii in the team's season opener.
SMU Athletic Director, Rick Hart, spoke with WFAA ahead of the match, stating "You got to start somewhere. [The sellout] is the first of many we think and hope."
He added that hosting a top nationally ranked team "gets a lot of new fans on campus, who probably haven't been here for some of our sporting events."
The milestone comes in the Mustangs' first year in the ACC. While Nebraska competes in the wildly competitive Big 10, having them here in Dallas early on in the non-conference schedule provides a good litmus test for where the SMU program is.
"We want to compete against the best," Hart said. "You've gotta beat those teams to build our program so that we can then be in their position. That's the goal that Coach Erger has and that we have for the volleyball program."
