Chris Fowler is sick and tired of college football fans who believe ESPN is biased toward the SEC. During ESPN College GameDay from LSU's campus in Baton Rouge Saturday, Fowler went on an extensive rant on the subject, ripping the "stupid" claims that the College Football Playoff selection committee or ESPN would prefer multiple SEC teams in the playoff.
"People around the country think that the committee can only operate with an agenda in mind. They don't believe there can be integrity, objectivity in the committee, they think it's all about agendas. They think agendas are everywhere. They think ESPN is about agendas. They think that… we love the idea that all these teams from one little region control the balance of power at the moment in college football. That's great for the SEC, it's great for the SEC Network. It's great for CBS. It's not great for anyone who televises a bracket. What's good for the sport overall, what's good for interest in a playoff and ratings is to have teams from all over the country represented. To have a west coast team, to have a midwest team, to have a team from the Big XII or ACC, and maybe an SEC, of course. Whoever's in it, they're going to watch."
Is ESPN's coverage biased toward the SEC? Well, five of the top 10 teams in the country are all from the SEC, and SEC teams have won seven of the last 10 BCS national championships — so naturally SEC teams get more national coverage than, say, Pac-12 teams. College GameDay has been broadcast from SEC campuses four times this season, more than any other conference.
"I'm a little defensive, but I get defensive when stupid, uninformed stuff gets repeated again and again, and somehow people all over the world think we have a stake in having three teams from this league [the SEC] get in.
