DALLAS -- With his team sitting out during the NBA playoffs, Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban is overseeing a different kind of contest.

On his blog Monday, he asked fans to come up with a new design for the Mavs uniforms.

"You know what an NBA uniform looks like," Cuban wrote in his blog post. "You know what the Mavs colors are for today and the past. We want some new ideas that stay true to our logo and at least close to our current color schemes."

And I am like, 'This is awesome,'" Dyallen Efendi said. "This contest for me, because I am a graphics designer and I love the Mavs.

She immediately sketched a get-up and submitted it.

I feel really good about it," she said.

But not all the reactions to the contest have been uniformly positive.

Some designers commented they were insulted such a high-profile project is being farmed out to amateurs. And several blog followers are criticizing Cuban for being cheap, since the billionaire is promising nothing to the winning entrant.

"Who will own your design? The minute you post it, the Mavs will," Cuban wrote. "If you think its horrible that the Mavs own your design. Do not post. If you think its cool that the Mavs could possibly use your design and you will have eternal bragging rights, then post away."

Still, Efendi said she is always honored to wear Mavericks garb, and she ll be even more thrilled if they end up wearing hers.

If the Mavericks wear my design, that s it," she said. "I just need that. That s awesome.

Ideas are being accepted through the end of May.

Any change to the current uniform, which has been in use since the 2001-2002 season, wouldn t take effect until the 2015-2016 season.
