Luka's scoring magic should have him in the Mavericks' record books (again)

Mark Aguirre has held the Mavericks single season scoring record for 40 years. Now, Luka Doncic will likely unseat the Mavs scoring title.

When you think of Dallas' best scorers in franchise history, most people would think of Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic.

Neither of these European sensations hold the franchise's single season scoring record, though. That honor belongs to Mark Aguirre, the Mavs' No. 1 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft and third all-time leading scorer in franchise history. In the 1983-83 season, Aguirre scored 2,330 points in 79 games played.

That single season scoring record has stood for 40 years, even with Nowitzki nailing fadeaway jumpers and 3-pointers at the top of the key for 21 years. The closest Nowitzki ever came to Aguirre's record was in 2005-06, when the 7-foot German scored 2,151 points.

Doncic, though, has this record within reach with eight games remaining this season. The NBA's leading scorer (34 points per game) has scored 2,210 entering Tuesday night's matchup with the Golden State Warriors. Doncic only needs 120 points to pass Aguirre, and if his averages hold true, would do so in 3.5 games – meaning it could happen at home against Houston.

Snagging this record would add another franchise accolade to his illustrious resume Mavericks lore. Doncic holds the single game scoring record in franchise history, his 73-point showing against the Atlanta Hawks back in January. Doncic leads the Mavericks in triple doubles by a wide margin (75). His coach, Jason Kidd, is closest with 21.

So, it seems it's not a matter of if ... but when Doncic unseats Aguirre. But how will he do it? Step back three? Free throw line? Underhanded scoop from the 3-point line? (but seriously, that was ridiculous!)

We'll have to wait and see.
