'It's holy ground' | Super Mavs fan owns the 2011 Championship Court

Mark Thompson owns the center court where the Mavericks won an NBA Championship.

FAIRVIEW, Texas — In addition to airing every game of the 2024 NBA Finals on our station, WFAA is also hosting a special presentation called "The Pregame" before each and every matchup in the series. Head here for more information.

His house is a mini Dallas Mavericks museum.

”Well there is the court. That is the actual 2011 championship court,” said Thompson.

He owns what some fans consider holy ground -- the center court where the Mavericks won their first and only NBA Championship.

”So, you think of all the players that have tipped off on that, all the celebrities whose feet have been on it. So, it’s on our wall now,” said Thompson.

That’s because then Mavs owner, Mark Cuban decided to replace the court. So, the old one was sitting in a warehouse.

”It was in horrible shape; the paint had faded.”

Thompson asked Cuban if he could have it.

”And he said what are you going to do with that, and I said I’m going to put it in a game room,” said Thompson.

He had a company restore it with new fade-proof paint. Then when he built his new home, he had the builder install it.

Thompson and his wife have the Mavs magic tough.

For their 30th anniversary, they decided to visit all 30 arenas where the Mavs played, that was in 2011.

”We got this crazy idea that started off as a joke that turned into a dare to hit all 30 stadiums with the Mavs, and we did and then they won the championship."

Not only did he get the court, the Mavs gave him a championship ring, and Dirk Nowitzki himself presented him with a replica of the Larry O’Brien trophy.

”I was blown away saying I can’t believe this.”

So, we asked him what happens if the Mavs win this year where will he put a second court?

”I don’t think we are going to push our luck and not ask for the second one.”

And for the record, Thompson has the same feeling about this team that he did in 2011.

Not to jinx anything but he’s betting on the Mavs.
