DALLAS — There is a new phenomenon in Mavs Twitter: "Did Dwight Powell get hit in the face tonight?"
It's a silly question, but one that has brought on a life of its own whenever the Mavericks have games.
Max Newberg started the X account, @DwightsFace, in December 2022 (according to the profile's bio), and reports exactly what the title says.
If Dwight Powell gets hit in the face – which according to the timeline of this X account happens more often than you'd think – then the video of the incident is shared. Sometimes, Powell escapes unscathed, like on Jan. 9. against the Memphis Grizzlies. Other times, there are semi-viral moments of when he does, like when he bonked his noggin in the lane pre-game.
Newberg told WFAA he had never seen anyone talk about how much Powell got hit, and it became a running joke between him and his friends and family. He said he noticed the pattern and that was why he started the account in the first place, thinking maybe it would actually reverse the trend.
Since starting the account, Newberg said it seemed to have the opposite effect and the occurrences became even more frequent.
"At the start of this account, I was excited that one of my tweets hit 50 views," Newberg said. "I started tagging some accounts under my tweets to try to get more views, and @Mavs_MFFL and @lynziekate are two that were nice enough to mention me and follow the account. They both already had a lot of followers, so their acknowledgment helped me reach more Mavs fans. I also tagged Mark Followill on my tweets, not expecting anything to come of it, and he was cool enough to mention the account on the broadcast a few times."
The account posted a thread of the "top 10 Dwight Powell face hits from Jan. 1, 2023 to Feb. 13, 2023.

" I feel for Dwight – even though he’s the one getting hit, he’s typically the one that gets called for the foul," Newberg said.
So does Powell and the Mavs know about the account? We reached out but haven't heard back yet.
"It would be amazing if the Mavs or Dwight ever did notice or mention my account, but it’s already been so cool that Mavs fans actually care about the account and have fun with it," Newberg said.
