DALLAS — After a training camp injury, Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Exum will likely be out for three months, sources say.
The Mavericks announced Wednesday that Exum underwent successful surgery after sustaining an injury to his right wrist during training camp. The team did not provide a timetable for his return, but ESPN's Shams Charania reported the Mavs guard will likely miss three months.
Exum hasn't checked in since the Mavericks' postseason run. The nine-season vet did make an appearance during Monday's preseason home game against the Memphis Grizzlies, sporting a brace on his right hand.
The NBA regular season tips off in just under two weeks, and if the three-month timetable proves accurate, Exum could miss 34 of the team's 82 games. Last season, Exum averaged 19.3 minutes as the team's backup point guard.
Now, head coach Jason Kidd will need to name Exum's replacement. The team has two options: Spencer Dinwiddie, a 10-year NBA journeyman, or Jaden Hardy, a third-year player hungry for minutes. If the preseason match against the Grizzlies means anything, Hardy could be the favorite for the backup spot. In that game, Hardy played 34 minutes, racking up game highs in scoring (21) and assists (9).
