Mavs sign GM Nico Harrison to multi-year contract extension

The Dallas Mavericks have signed general manager Nico Harrison to a multi-year contract extension as the club heads into the NBA Finals.

Specifics on the deal were not disclosed, but Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont said the franchise is "proud to have him as part of our team for the long term."

Harrison, a former Nike executive, took the Mavericks general manager job in the summer of 2021, replacing longtime top exec Donnie Nelson. Harrison's hiring, and the hiring of Jason Kidd as head coach, marked a new era for Dallas, as longtime coach Rick Carlisle had also exited the franchise.

While Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals in their first year under Kidd and Harrison, the team continued to rebuild around superstar Luka Doncic, ultimately acquiring Kyrie Irving during the 2022-23 season.

The Mavs missed the playoffs that year, but bounced back for a strong finish this season and then a deep playoff run to the Finals. A big part of the Mavs' success down the stretch has been attributed to Harrison's acquisitions of Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington Jr. at the trade deadline. And in the broader view, Harrison's trade for Irving seemed to finally land Doncic a star running mate.

“Nico Harrison has demonstrated his leadership and capabilities in the Dallas Mavericks organization,” Dumont said in a statement. “His vision, along with his efforts on behalf of our players and staff have propelled our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons and of course this year's NBA Finals."

Harrison in a statement said he was "incredibly grateful" to the Mavs brass "for their continued trust and confidence" this year.

“Patrick and his family have accepted me as their own from day one and I am honored to work alongside them, as well as Jason Kidd, as we continue to build a winning culture in Dallas," Harrison said.

The Mavericks play the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Boston. The game will be televised on WFAA.
