Two-time All-Star Elvis Andrus to retire with the Texas Rangers

According to the Rangers, Andrus will also throw out the first pitch before Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Two-time All-Star and longtime shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Elvis Andrus, announced that he will retire as an active player on Friday, Sept. 6 as a member of the Rangers organization. 

According to a release from the Rangers, Andrus will retire at a press conference hosted at Globe Life Field at 2:30 p.m. Friday. He will be joined by Rangers Hall of Famer Michael Young and the Los Angeles Angels Manager Ron Washington, who managed the Rangers for the first six seasons of Andrus' Major League career. 

Andrus, who spent time with Oakland and the Chicago White Sox from 2021 to 2023, played for the Texas Rangers from 2009 to 2020. During his lengthy career in the MLB, Andrus posted a .269 batting average with 102 home runs, 775 RBIs and 347 stolen bases. 

The shortstop earned All-Star accolades two times in 2010 and 2012 and was the Rangers' Rookie of the Year in 2009. In addition, Andrus was named the Rangers' Player of the Year in 2017 when he recorded 100 runs, 191 hits, 20 homers and 88 RBIs. 

To add to the momentous occasion, Andrus will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Rangers take on the Angels on Friday night.
