ARLINGTON, Texas โ It's normal to see jerseys of the away team at sporting events, especially Astros fans attending games against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
But there was one Astros jersey that caught the eyes of many Rangers fans at Game 3 of the ALCS, including WFAA's resident Rangers fanatic Teresa Woodard. Armando Contreraz wore a Houston Astros jersey to the game, but that's not the peculiar part of this story. The unique aspect of the jersey was the back of it.
"I get it all the time. I have to tell [Rangers fans] look at the back of my jersey before you beat me up," Contreraz told WFAA.
The back of the jersey reads: "Cheaters," with the number 17, signifying the 2017 season when the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers for their first World Series title. Just about every baseball fan outside of the Astros fanbase will appreciate this jersey, given the trash can cheating allegations. WFAA detailed the entire debacle in our Rangers fan guide to hating the Astros.
Contreraz isn't even a Rangers fan, either. He's a die-hard Dodgers fan, which obviously puts the inception of this jersey into perspective. He moved to Dallas-Fort Worth from California 30 years ago, but never let go of his fandom. So, when his grandsons asked him who he was rooting for in the playoffs, he told them it was the Rangers' time to shine.
"I think [the Rangers] are going to win it all. It's their time," Contreraz said. "I think it's [the Rangers] turn. They've got the players to win it all."
Texas won Games 1 and 2 in Houston, but fell to the Astros in Game 3, 8-5. Game 4 and Game 5 are also at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The Rangers can end the series at home, but if Houston steals another game on the road, we'll be guaranteed to go back to Houston for at least one more game at Minute Maid Park.
The winner of the ALCS is set to take on the winner between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS. The Phillies lead that series 2-0.
