DALLAS — Head Coach Jason Kidd will begin the next round of playoffs with added job security.
The Dallas Mavericks on Monday announced that the team finalized a multi-year contract extension with Kidd, according to a press release. He is in his third season as Mavericks' head coach and tallied 50-plus wins and playoff appearances in two of those seasons.
A disappointing end to the 2022-2023 season and a slow start to the 2024 season prompted criticism of Kidd. However, after a strong final month of the regular season, the Mavs earned the Southwest division title and a strong position in the playoffs.
On Friday night, Dallas defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs, advancing to face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.
The team didn't immediately offer any details on the terms of the contract.
"I have known Jason for a long time, and I cannot think of a better, more qualified candidate to lead this team going forward," General Manager Nico Harrison said in the release. "As a former NBA Champion Hall of Fame player, Jason brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role which cannot be duplicated.
Kidd won a NBA Championship as a player with the Mavericks in 2011.
“We are excited to have Coach Kidd continue to lead our team throughout the coming years with this well-earned contract extension," Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont said in the release. "Kidd led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we are looking forward to his leadership in continuing to build and grow this already great franchise."
