FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Christian University has added a trio of new walk-on players to the 2023-24 women’s basketball roster.
Freshmen Piper Davis and Ella Hamlin, along with Sophmore Mekhayia Moore will suit up with the Horned Frogs after head coach Mark Campbell held open tryouts.
TCU had to forfeit their last two games against Kansas State and Iowa State saying "the cancellations are a result of injuries within the TCU program and ensure the health and safety of the program's student-athletes" leaving the time with only six available players.
The forfeited games do not affect TCU's overall record, per NCAA policy. TCU's record drops to 1-6 in conference, but remains 14-4 overall.
TCU also added Sarah Sylvester to the roster who is already a player for the university's volleyball team. Sylvester, a 6-foot-3 post player, played varsity volleyball and basketball at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She is the first TCU student-athlete in the Big 12 era to play varsity basketball and volleyball.
The hardwood isn't unfamiliar territory for the trio of guards.
As a high school senior, Moore led the team to their first-ever UIL Girls Basketball State Championship in 2022. She was named State Championship MVP and chosen to the State Championship All-Tournament team. Moore attended Brownsboro HS where she tallied more than 1,000 career points over a four-year varsity run. She is also a dedicated student off the court. She graduated as the school's Salutatorian and is a member of TCU's Chancellor's Scholars Program.
Hamlin attended Granbury HS where she scored more than 1,500 career points over a four-year varsity run. She was crowned back-to-back as the District's Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023. Hamlin averaged 18 points per game and scored a career-high 42 points her senior year.
Davis hails from Timberline High School in Boise, Idaho. She led her team to the 5A Girls Basketball State Championship in 2022. Davis was selected to compete in the 2023 Idaho State All-Star Game and was tabbed to the IdahoSports.com All-Tournament second team. She scored a career-high 22 points in the first round of the 2023 5A Girls Basketball State Championship. Davis becomes the second member of her family to play Division I basketball. Her father, Jerrod Davis, played for Gonzaga from 1989-1992.
