FORT WORTH, Texas — Is the best team in Texas based in the Fort Worth area? The North Crowley Panthers, fresh off an upset win over previously No. 1- ranked Desoto, has as legitimate a claim as any team in the state for top dog, after hanging 57 on the two-time defending 6A-Division II champions.
Now, another major test. In comes 17th-ranked Denton Guyer, for a prime time clash to be aired on WFAA's Friday Night Football at 7 p.m. Friday.
You can watch the game live on our streaming platform WFAA+, which is available on Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV. You can also watch the game right here on WFAA.com, or our WFAA YouTube channel.
North Crowley advanced to the state semifinals in 2023, losing to eventual 6A-Division I state champion Duncanville. This year, it seems that quarterback Chris Jimerson and his crew have elevated their play even further.
Jimerson and wide receiver Quentin Gibson combined for four passing touchdowns in the win over Desoto, and form one of the most dangerous QB-WR duos in the state. And running back Cornelius Warren gives the Panthers (2-0) a bonafide threat out of the backfield, leading to a truly balanced offensive attack.
Denton Guyer comes in 2-0 as well, having defeated 5A-Division I state superpower Aledo in Week 1, and knocking off Arlington Martin by three scores in Week 2. Transfer quarterback Kevin Sperry is an Oklahoma commit, and has already shown himself to be as advertised. The Guyer offense also features Sterling Schneider, who has run for 238 yards and a touchdown on just 29 carries this year – an 8.2 yards per carry clip.
The Wildcats also feature defensive lineman Xavier Ukponu. The three-star prospect received 36 scholarship offers before committing to Wisconsin. Expect to see some good battles between Ukponu and North Crowley star offensive lineman Henry Fenuku. Fenuku is a four-star prospect destined for Missouri.
Our Friday Night Football pregame show will begin at approximately 6:50 p.m., with kickoff to follow at 7 p.m. Join Jonah Javad and Hek'ma Harrison on the call, for Week 3 of the Texas high school football season.
