ARLINGTON, Texas — The Gordon Longhorns successfully defended their position at the top of 1A-Division I Six-Man football by defeating the Whiteface Antelopes 70-24 Wednesday afternoon.
The teams faced off at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, each with hopes of hoisting the UIL state championship trophy. From the opening moments, however, it was all Gordon, as the Longhorns controlled the game from start to finish.
The defending state champion Longhorns started out strong, scoring their first two touchdowns within six minutes of kickoff. Up 16-0, Gordon fended off a couple of Whiteface scores and continued to build its lead, exiting the first quarter up 36-16.
A 28-point onslaught in the second quarter pushed the Longhorns’ lead to 64-24 at halftime, leaving them just five points shy of triggering the mercy rule, which requires a 45-point margin. And it didn't take long for Gordon to reach that point.
Less than one minute into the third quarter of play, the Longhorns plowed through the shortened endzone to officially end play and Whiteface's hopes of a state title in 2024.
The final score of this one is eerily similar to the Longhorns' win in last year's state championship game when they defeated Westbrook 64-20.
With only two seniors on the roster, the back-to-back state champions appear poised for continued success in the coming years.
