SAN ANTONIO — Plano East has done it!
The Panthers capped off an incredible, undefeated 40-win championship season for the first time in 20 years. Plano East defeated Round Rock Stony Point in the 6A UIL State championship Saturday night, 53-41. The last time a Texas high school boys team had won the state title in any division, while going undefeated and winning 40 games was the 2003-04 Houston Milby team.
It was also the first undefeated championship season in the highest division of Texas high school boys basketball since the 2006-07 Duncanville Panthers, but that team won only 39 games.
WFAA profiled Plano East back in February as the team was wrapping up their district slate. The team boasted 11 seniors and took full advantage of running its high-octane, up tempo and hard-nosed defense, despite being what some would consider under-sized.
However, their cohesion on the court and brotherhood off the court helped them against the against the state's best teams.
The championship was also Plano East's first in school history. The only other championship appearance in school history was in the 1993-94 season, when the Panthers lost to Sugar Land Willowridge, 50-44.
