GARLAND, Texas — Editor's note: The video published above is a WFAA story on the Plano East boys basketball team from earlier this month.
The Plano East boys basketball team kept its undefeated record intact after beating the No. 10 ranked Allen Eagles in the UIL 6A Regional quarterfinal, 79-52.
The Panthers (36-0) advanced to the regional quarterfinals, where they'll face Fort Worth's V.R. Eaton Eagles (26-8).
Plano East enters the matchup as the No. 3 ranked team in the nation amid a historic run that broke the school record for wins after they had won their 33rd game.
WFAA profiled the Plano East boys basketball team earlier this month, before their game against Hebron.
The team boasts 11 seniors this year, which, in high school sports, is mostly unheard of. Most of coach Matt Wester's boys have come up from grade school camps and have been playing together for a long while.
"It's the best two hours of my day [coaching them]," said Wester. "One word I'd use to describe this team is 'brotherhood," he said.
"We know what kind of team we have. We just want to leave our mark here," said point guard Rachard Angton.
The Panthers have since added five wins to their tally since then. But the prize has remained the same: Win a state championship. If the Panthers make it to the state tournament, it'll be their first visit in 30 years. There hasn't been an undefeated state champion in the highest division of boys basketball since the 2006-07 Duncanville team (39-0).
Should Plano East run the table and win state, they'd finish the season 40-0. The last Texas high school boys basketball team to win 40 games in a season was 2A Martin's Mill who racked up a 40-0 record in 2019-20, but then lost in the state championship game to Gruver (32-5) to finish the season 40-1.
Plano East takes on V.R. Eaton on Friday, March 1 at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth.
