SAN ANTONIO — For the first time in nearly a decade, the Lancaster Tigers are state champions in boys basketball.
Lancaster defeated Killeen Ellison in the 5A State championship at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Saturday, 59-30. The win marked the school's third title in history after winning back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016.
The last time Lancaster had qualified for the UIL State tournament was in 2020, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lancaster would have played Fort Bend Hightower in the UIL State semifinal that year.
The Tigers win their third state championship in its final year in division 5A. Lancaster will move up to 6A in the next UIL realignment, where they've been placed into 6A District 11 with Cedar Hill, Dallas Skyline, DeSoto, Duncanville Mesquite, Mesquite Horn and Waxahachie.
The Tigers graduate six seniors and return six juniors and one sophomore. The DFW-based team finish their season rattling off 24 wins in a row, last losing to 6A District 8 champ South Grand Prairie, 47-45 in early December 2023.
