BROCK, Texas — The folks in Parker County will get your attention real quick when you ask them to explain what the Brock-Peaster rivalry is really like for them.
They say it's like their own little version of Duke-Carolina.
Two schools separated by just 20 miles, who both have programs with rich histories of winning, constantly battling with one another for the right to say who is the best team in the area, and who both wear their own shade of blue.
Sounds about right.
And that's why on Saturday night, WFAA will broadcast both ends of this girls-boys doubleheader. The girls game tips at 6:15 p.m., with the boys game scheduled to start right after, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
WFAA's coverage will begin just after 6 p.m. and carry through both games.
The games were initially scheduled for Tuesday night, but were postponed to Thursday due to the weather. Now they've been pushed back a second time, to Saturday night.
This year, all four programs are ranked in the Top 10 in the TABC State Rankings for 3A basketball. Peaster's boys are ranked No. 5, while Brock is ranked No. 6. And on the girls side, Peaster is ranked No. 6, and Brock is No. 9.
Yeah, they're pretty good at basketball at these two schools. Oh, and did we mention they've combined for 13 state championships?
The Brock girls have the lions share of those titles, with eight to their name. That includes a five-year run from 2009 to 2013 where they won the title every year. The Brock boys have three championships, most recently in 2015. And the Peaster boys have won two state titles in program history.
For the boys, this is the third meeting of the season. Through the first two, they are completely even: Brock 101, Peaster 101. Brock won the first meeting in the Whataburger Tournament in late December, 56-55. A week later, they played again in the district slate, and Peaster won 46-45.
In the first game, Peaster had a shot at the buzzer to win that missed. In the second game, Brock had a shot at the buzzer to win that missed.
Thursday night represents the rubber match and bragging rights for the year.
On the girls side, Peaster won the only meeting so far this season. It was just a one-point game at halftime, with Peaster leading 22-21. But in the second half, some foul trouble for Brock contributed to Peaster going on a pair of runs, opening up an eventual 18-point win.
Historically, Brock has had the better of this rivalry on the girls side. But recently, Peaster has owned Brock, winning five straight times. Thursday night, Brock has designs on ending that losing streak.
You can watch the game live on the WFAA YouTube channel or on WFAA+, via AmazonFireTV or ROKU. We will carry both games within the single stream, so you won't need to change channels, change streams, or alter anything once you're watching. We'll carry you through the evening, right from the girls game into the boys game.
