FRISCO, TX - The girls swimming team at Highland Park High School had one of the most impressive runs in Texas High School History. They won ten straight Championships, an impressive record that will be hard for any school to repeat.
Last weekend, that championship run came to an end when the girls at Frisco High School won their first.
We couldn't be more proud to end that string, says Frisco swimming coach Bruce Eubanks. It was certainly an exciting meet.
Eubanks has seen his boy s team win three state championships and has the banners to prove it. But when the girl s team won the Class 4A State title last weekend, it was something new.
I feel blessed to be here, Eubanks says. I've had wonderful support through those years and I ve had the good fortune of having some talented swimmers.
It was the girl s first win ever and we knocked off a big competitor at the same time so it was a double win, says Melanie McDonough.
Maybe it was their lucky pig which the girls carried to every meet. It's a small battery operated swine that snorts as it crawls across the surface poolside.
Pretty much before every race, we would kiss its nose and it's for good luck and it worked this year, says Whitney Allen. It's our good luck charm.
It was one year ago that the Frisco girls suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Highland Park in the state championship, losing by just five points. It's those five points that served as motivation for this season, not just to go back to Austin, but to win a state championship.
It was really depressing. We came in knowing that we didn't want to feel like that again, says Amber Jenkins. It's was our turn to win the meet and we waited long enough.
It feels really good to actually get a state championship because we were so close last year, says Whitney Allen. The fact that we were so strong this year to actually achieve that, especially by 100 points, it means a lot to our team and especially to our school as a whole.
That 100 point winning margin is one the most dominating performances ever at the state meet and earned Eubanks coach of the year honors for the sixth time in his career.
It's always a humbling honor and I never take it for granted, says Eubanks. They were determined and worked hard all year long. I was just proud of them for staying together. It was a total team effort.
