ALEDO, Texas — Tim Buchanan, the longtime Aledo football coach who built the Parker County school into one of the most dominant high school football programs in Texas, is returning to the sidelines, the school district announced Thursday.
Buchanan, who had stepped down in 2014 to become the district's athletic director, will become Aledo's head coach again later this month.
Steve Wood – the head coach who replaced Buchanan and won three state championships, including the school's eighth title in December – will now replace Buchanan as the district athletic director.
Buchanan had plans to retire from the athletic director role this month, but "I have come to realize how much I have missed coaching," he said in a statement.
“This led me to announce my intention to retire last spring," Buchanan said. "The chance to coach again in Aledo ISD is something I couldn’t turn down.”
Buchanan led Aledo to five state championships and a 227-53-3 before retiring after the 2013 season.
Wood, who had served as Buchanan's defensive coordinator before taking over the program, said he was "beyond excited" to become athletic director.
"Aledo has been a very special place for me and my family and I want to do all I can to see that it stays that way for as long as possible," he said in a statement.
