Frico RoughRiders Introduce "Choctaw Lazy River"

It’s not quite the outfield pool that the Arizona Diamondbacks sport at Chase field in Phoenix. Nor is it the “Touch Tank” at Tropicana Field in Tampa. No, in fact, it’s nearly three and a half times as big as both of them.

Combined.

From the press release:

Rising above the right-field wall, the Choctaw Lazy River will provide one of the most unique viewing and entertainment experiences in all of professional sports. At a consistent depth of 3 feet, the gently-flowing river will span nearly 175 feet from end to end -- longer than an Olympic-size swimming pool and nearly the length of a regulation National Hockey League ice rink.

That’s right, the new Choctaw Lazy River in Frisco will dwarf not only all other water-based baseball attractions, but projects to be the largest pool attraction in all of pro sports. It won’t quite be finished in time for opening day, but it will arrive at Dr. Pepper ballpark just in time for the sweltering Texas summer, sometime in early June.

Here are a few of the perks of the new Lazy River area:

  • 360-degree river access
  • 2 1/2 hour all-you-can-eat buffet
  • two open-air cabana structures for food and beverage service
  • built-in bar, dedicated buffet tables and private deck space in the larger cabana structure (which can be rented separately)
  • additional public space for lounging and picnicking surrounding the water
  • two 23-foot-tall structures dropping an 18’x20’ rain curtain
  • complimentary Dr Pepper products
  • a pair of RoughRiders' sunglasses for each ticket-holder.

Additionally, beer and wine is included for groups that purchase either the Cabana Bar & Patio or the entire area.

Gone are the days of the dilapidated Bull Durham-era minor league ballparks, it seems. Even though Frisco is only a Double-A team, owner Chuck Greenberg’s commitment (and the commitment of the entire organization) to the fan experience has been second-to-none, and while Frisco certainly isn't abandoning the rich Minor League tradition of wacky promotional nights, this upgrade signals yet another step towards providing a world-class facility in which to enjoy them.

As Cutty from The Wire might say: “The game done changed.”
