DALLAS — Fisk University's gymnastics team went viral on social media this week after video and images were shared from the team's debut meet in Las Vegas.
The team made history as the first HBCU to compete at an NCAA gymnastics competition ever. Last fall, the Nashville HBCU became the first to have a women's gymnastics team at all.
Of the 15 gymnasts listed on the team's roster, three are from North Texas. Freshman Zanna Brewer graduated from Hebron High School in Dallas, Liberty Mora is a freshman from McKinney who attended Plano East and Morgan Price graduated from Coppell High School after moving to North Texas as a child.
While the news of Fisk's debut drew attention from sports networks and fans, one moment, in particular, pulled even more attention. Price stuck an impressive landing on vault, earning a whopping 9.9 score.
In her debut collegiate performance, at a historic time, Price won vault.
"When we did awards, I knew I got a really high score, but honestly I thought someone got a higher score," Price said in a written statement to WFAA. "To win an event at my first meet was super exciting and encouraging."
Last summer, Price shared her story with WFAA. She had accepted an offer to join the gymnastics team at The University of Arkansas, and SEC powerhouse where here sister is on the team, but opted to de-commit so that she could go to Fisk.
Price said she had always dreamed of being a college gymnast, but she also wanted to attend an HBCU. The creation of Fisk's team made both of her dreams possible.
This Friday, the team will compete against the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. On Monday, they will head to Athens, Georgia to compete against Georgia, Ohio State and Rutgers.
