DeSoto Lady Eagles break national record in 4x100 meter relay

“I'm very excited,” said junior Jayla Hollis. “I'm even more excited about going even faster this weekend."

DESOTO, Texas — It’s beginning to look like another season of soaring high for the DeSoto ISD Lady Eagles.

The girls track and field team is, once again, putting their school and themselves on the map by breaking a national relay record.

The scholar athletes recently won the girls 4x100 meter relay during the 2019 Texas 6A Region 1 meet. The girls raced 44:44. Their time beat the 2004 record set by Long Beach Poly.

“I'm very excited,” said Jayla Hollis. “I'm even more excited about going even faster this weekend, because I think we can."

The team said it worked hard and remained focused during the regional meet. They say they didn’t actually set out to finish in record-breaking time. They just wanted to do their best.

“We just want to do great,” said Rosaline Effiong. “We want to win so that's the driving force.”

Their hard work continues. This year, the Lady Eagles qualified for the most events, ever, for the 2019 State track and field competitions. Coach June Villers said that is a major accomplishment, considering the challenges the young women had to hurdle this season.

"Until the Regional meet, we weren't really lucky with weather," Villers said. "We either had very cold, cold, weather in the 30s and 40s or lots of wind. So, it just never really allowed us to do what we wanted to do."

The tight-knit track and field team says it’s their chemistry, focus and determination that keeps them running toward their goals.

The Lady Eagles are headed to Austin on May 11 to compete for another State Championship. They say they hope to bring home several medals and trophies.
