A third-year starter as only a junior, Denton Ryan quarterback Spencer Sanders added some spice to an already big Oklahoma State day after the Cowboys defeated Texas. Sanders, who has offers from every Power 5 conference, committed to Oklahoma State after watching the a 49-31 over the Longhorns. Oklahoma State Mike Gundy is well-regarded among Texas high school programs. Oklahoma State recently signed Denton Guyer's J.W. Walsh, the son of Guyer head coach John Walsh, for the Class of 2011.
Sanders is highly popular in the Denton community as a leader on and off the field. In a WFAA Player of the Week Poll last November, Sanders received one of the top five vote totals in winning the award.
Sanders is Oklahoma State's first commit for the Class of 2018. He's has standing offers for quite a while from Texas A&M, Kansas, North Carolina, Colorado, Kansas State, Missouri, Ole Miss, Penn State, South Carolina, Texas Tech, North Texas, and SMU.
Sanders made his announcement to commit from Stillwater, OK. on Twitter following the Cowboys' game. Oklahoma State extended Sanders an offer for the Class of 2018 following another strong spring practice performance during college evaluating period. Offering quarterbacks for each class is one of a program's strongest signals for direction because other top-rated quarterbacks likely will look at other depth-charts if a college gets an early commitment from a highly-rated prospect.
The first day the Class of 2018 can officially sign is the first Wednesday in February in 2018. Sanders' early commitment likely signals he'll make decision on his academics if he will graduate early in order to compete for playing time in the spring of 2018 for his true freshman season.
The 6-2, 190-pound Sanders is a dual-threat in every way. He has a 4.4 automated time in the 40-yard dash. IN 2 1/2 years, he's passed for 43 touchdowns with 25 rushing touchdowns. He's got a strong, accurate arm but is Ryan's leading rusher as well. Sanders helped revive Ryan's program back into state contention. After starting as a freshman and having his season ended with an injury. As a sophomore, Sanders keyed a 13-1 record which didn't end until the fourth round of the Class 6A playoffs with a loss to Allen. This season, Sanders is leading undefeated Ryan (6-0) as the No. 3 team in the Class 5A state rankings. He has thrown for 1,179 yards and 15 touchdowns in six games this season. He’s rushed for 529 and 11 more scores.
