Back in the fall, the Mavs, Stars and Rangers all played on the same day -- and it was pretty special for DFW sports fans

On Nov. 1, 2023, it was DFW sports versus the world. Now, six months later, another opportunity presents itself for North Texas sports fans to have a glorious night.

DALLAS — Wednesday night is a big one for DFW sports fans.

The Mavericks and Stars both have pivotal Game 5's in their respective first round series'. Meanwhile, the World Series champion Texas Rangers host Washington Nationals for the second game of their three-game homestand. All three games overlap each other, which caused a loaded streaming schedule for Bally Sports, prompting the network to move the Mavericks game to TXA 21 (KTXA).

We posted a DFW sports fan guide to watching all three games here. Even with as many professional sports teams North Texas has, it's somewhat rare for three of them to be playing in one night within hours of each other.

The Stars and Mavs share the American Airlines Center, so while there are occasions where they play the same day and turn the arena around in a matter of hours, those two typically play on opposite nights of each other. Here's an example of how it looks:

It's not necessarily a huge rarity for all these teams to play at once. It's happened three times already this year:

  • March 26
    • Stars beat Sabres, 3-2
    • Mavs beat Hornets, 130-104
    • Rangers lost to A's, 3-4
  • April 7
    • Stars beat Avalanche, 7-4
    • Mavs beat Rockets, 147-136 (OT)
    • Rangers lost to Astros, 1-3
  • April 9
    • Stars beat Sharks, 6-3
    • Mavs beat Kings, 132-96
    • Rangers lost to Red Sox, 4-1

But, for the purposes of this article, let's take a look back at the last time it happened in 2023: Nov. 1, 2023.

What a historic night that was.

Texas Rangers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5, clinch 1st World Series in history

Cementing a dominant postseason run, on this night, the Texas Rangers clinched their first World Series title after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-0.

Eric Nadel, the longtime radio voice of the Texas Rangers, delivered the special moment.

"Two balls, two strikes," Nadel said as Sborz delivered. "Sborz kicks and fires. He struck him out looking! It's over! It's over! The Rangers have won the World Series!"

"Ranger fans, you're not dreaming!" Nadel continued.

Dallas Mavericks beat the Chicago Bulls at home, 114-105

With a roster sans Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington (before the trade deadline), the Mavericks were led by forward Grant Williams with 25 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. with 24 points. Luka Doncic dropped 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished 10 assists in the win.

This game ended as Game 5 of the World Series was wrapping up, and former Mavericks governor Mark Cuban put the World Series on the jumbotron in the AAC so fans in attendance could watch the final outs and witness history.

Dallas Stars start hot in NHL season and beat Calgary Flames, 4-3

The NHL season was fresh, and the Dallas Stars picked up their sixth win of the season. The win improved the Stars to a 6-1-1 record at the time en route to the team's No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

Ten different Dallas Stars registered either a goal or an assist in the game.

A strong second period, where the Stars scored three goals, propelled them to the win.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article said November 1 was the last time all three of these teams played on the same date. Further research shows it's happened a few times since then, too. We regret the error.
