HOUSTON — Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian appears to be staying at the university after speculation he might be a candidate to replace Nick Saban at Alabama.
In a surprising move, Saban announced his retirement on Wednesday after leading the Crimson Tide to six National Championships.
Before taking over the Longhorns football program, Sarkisian served as Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2019 to 2020 and as a member of the staff from 2016 to 2017.
Sarkisian and his wife, Loreal, posted to social media their support for the Longhorns late Thursday night.
“It’s a great day to be a Longhorn,” the coach said.
Loreal Sarkisian also posted to X a “Hook’em” and orange heart emoji at the same time.
Coach Sarkisian is coming off his best season as the head coach of the Longhorns after leading the team to their first College Football Playoff berth.
The Longhorns came up short in their bid to play for the National Championship after falling to Washington, 37-31, in the semi-final played in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
