DALLAS — SMU football is in the Top 25, and head coach Rhett Lashlee has a new contract extension.
The Mustangs on Monday announced a multi-year contract extension for Lashlee, who led SMU to a 10-2 regular season record in their final season in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). SMU, which made its AP poll debut Sunday at No. 25, will play at Tulane on Saturday for the AAC championship.
And then, the Mustangs will head to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), joining the ranks of college football's Power Five conferences.
"We are excited to announce this extension with Coach Lashlee to keep him on the Hilltop for years to come," SMU Athletic Director Rick Hart said. "Coach, his family and his staff have poured so much into our program and our student-athletes. This extension is well deserved and there's no question about the commitment and dedication that he has shown to SMU. As we enter the ACC, there is no one we'd rather have leading our football program than Rhett."
Details of the contract extension weren't disclosed, as SMU is a private school.
Lashlee said he and his family "love being part of the SMU Family."
"We believe in what we are building on the Hilltop and we are excited to finish this season with a chance to compete for the conference championship in the American, and we're humbled to be leading our program into the ACC in 2024 and beyond," Lashlee said in a statement.
Lashlee is 17-8 in two seasons at the helm at SMU. He was previously the Mustangs' offensive coordinator in 2018 and 2019, before he took the same position at the University of Miami. When Sonny Dykes left SMU for the TCU job, Lashlee was brought back to the Hilltop as head coach.
