Update: Joey McGuire has told Cedar Hill players at noon Wednesday he will be leaving to join the staff at Baylor.

Joey McGuire of Cedar Hill is set to join Matt Rhule’s staff at Baylor, according to SicEm365. @SicEm365 reports McGuire will be the third high school coach to make the transition to the collegiate level since the hiring of Rhule last week, joining David Wetzel (San Antonio Reagan) and Shawn Bell (Cedar Ridge).

In 14 seasons as the head coach at Cedar Hill, McGuire accumulated a 141-42-0 record, including an 11-3 record in 2016 which ended with a loss in the quarterfinals of the playoffs against DeSoto on Dec. 3. Cedar Hill hadn't won a playoff game when McGuire took over in 2002. Cedar Hill won three state titles, played for a fourth and were a perennial state power featured on multiple national ESPN high school broadcasts.

Cedar Hill is one of the top Texas high school football programs in the country and will be highly sought. If there is a likely inside candidate, WFAA reports assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Aaron Woods will be a strong contender to succeed McGuire.

McGuire has been connected to multiple collegiate level jobs in the previous years, including most recently an opportunity to take a position at the University of Texas under former Texas head coach Charlie Strong.

McGuire recently told WFAA in Dallas that it would take the right job opportunity under the right head coach to make the move away from the high school ranks.

"I have talked to a few, but (I'm) not just going to go to college just to do it," McGuire said. "Has to be with the right guy."

McGuire's son Garrett McGuire was a senior quarterback for Cedar Hill in 2016.
