ROYSE CITY, Texas — Shelly Adams has seen just about everything as an emergency room nurse, but nothing could prepare her for what happened Friday night.
Adams lost control of her car at FM 548 near the Waterscape subdivision in Royse City and plunged into a pond.
It was the quick response of two Royse City officers, Shane Meek and John Bivins, that saved her life. Meek and Bivins both got into the pond and rescued Adams from her submerged car.
"If it weren't for them, I would not be here," Adams said.
The officers rushed toward the pond and waded in. They treaded water to move toward the car, which was nearly underwater. "So we both dropped our duty belts so we wouldn't be weighted down in the water," Meek said.
Meanwhile, Adams was trying to kick out the window with no luck. She called her husband Matt, while water was filling up inside the car.
"At first it didn't register," Matt Adams said about the phone call. "So I [asked her] again, 'What?' She told me and then the phone went dead." Matt rushed out of his house and into his truck headed to the pond.
Shelly said she thought she was going to die. Then one of the officers used a flashlight to break the passenger window. "Then all of a sudden I see a face," Shelly said. "I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm gonna live!'"
Officers reached the back door handle and opened the passenger-side back door. "As soon as she jumped out to us, the car hit bottom," Bivins said.
By the time Matt arrived to the pond, Shelly was already in the ambulance.
Shelly said she wasn't really hurt, but is badly bruised. Three days later, she wanted to meet the men who saved her.
On Monday evening, Shelly met Officers Meek and Bivins at the Royce City police station. Shelly teared up as she hugged both officers and said, "You have no idea how much I appreciate you."
"I think it was the grace of God and their selflessness is why my wife is sitting beside me today," Matt said.
The Adams' are grateful to two men who have never done this before. And those men said they are willing to do it all over again if it happens again tonight. "This is what we do. We love what we do," Bivins said.
