Two killed in wrong-way crash in Fort Worth

There were multiple reports of a wrong-way driver heading westbound on eastbound I-30.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Police said 911 calls started coming in around the area of University and West Freeway. There were multiple reports of a wrong-way driver heading westbound on eastbound I-30.

For 9 minutes and about 10 miles, police said they followed the vehicle on the westbound lane. They went parallel to the female driver for safety. At one point, officers threw spikes to slow the car down, but the woman did not stop. It was around 3:30 in the morning on Friday. The woman collided into a vehicle head-on.

The wrong-way driver and the driver in another car both died. The Medical Examiner’s office is working to identify them.

“Any time we have a loss of life here in Fort Worth, it’s tragic no matter how it happened. It’s very, very sad and tragic," Officer Buddy Calzada with FWPD said. "In speaking with just a few officers, I can tell you they were all very surprised when these vehicles collided.”

At this time, police do not know if the woman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They also don’t know exactly where she got onto the highway. It’s all part of the ongoing investigation.
