Texas Cable News — TXCN — will cease operations on April 1 after providing TV viewers across the state with around-the-clock news, weather and sports for more than 16 years.
The decision to discontinue the cable channel was made during meetings between TXCN owner Gannett Co. Inc. and various cable outlets.
TXCN currently replays news broadcasts from Gannett's network of Texas TV stations, including WFAA in Dallas-Fort Worth; KHOU in Houston; KVUE in Austin; and KENS in San Antonio. In addition, it offers weather updates tailored for cable subscribers around the state.
At its launch on January 1, 1999, TXCN was available in 500,000 homes, offering original programming from its state-of-the-art digital broadcasting facility in downtown Dallas. Within two years, TXCN could be seen in more than 1.4 million cable television households in Texas.
The channel also featured original sports talk programming and hosted statewide debates.
TXCN scaled back its original programming in 2004 to focus on time-shifted newscasts from its affiliated TV stations.
After TXCN signs off, you can continue to see the news, sports and weather content that filled its schedule directly from Gannett's Texas TV stations and websites.
